Americans Worried About Pollution, Not Global Warming

Poll puts global warming at bottom of pack

Global warming might be the top environmental issue for the White House but for average Americans, that would be having safe drinking water.

A new poll from Gallup, conducted March 5-8, shows that when asked to rank their top environmental concerns issues close to home like water pollution and air pollution came out on top while global warming came dead last. Gallup presented poll participants with a list of environmental concerns and asked what issues they worried about "a great deal, a fair amount, only a little or not at all."

Pollution of drinking water was something 55% of Americans said they worried about "a great deal" followed by 47% saying the same for pollution of rivers, lakes and reservoirs. Concern dropped to 38% for air pollution before dropping further for environmental causes such as the rain forest, animal extinction and global warming.

Just 32% of Americans said they worry about global warming a great deal, a number that Gallup notes is skewed by party affiliation.

A final factor is the politicization of environmental issues. This is exemplified by the sharp political polarization in views of global warming. And although concern about environmental issues is lower among both Republicans and Democrats since 2000, it is down more among Republicans.
