Actress Rachel Weisz is speaking out against the idea that James Bond could be a woman in future iterations. The wife of current James Bond actor Daniel Craig was asked about rumors that the next Bond will be a Jane in an interview with The Telegraph and said that she thought the idea wasn't fair to women:
“[Bond creator Ian Fleming] devoted an awful lot of time to writing this particular character, who is particularly male and relates in a particular way to women,“ she said. "Why not create your own story rather than jumping on to the shoulders and being compared to all those other male predecessors? Women are really fascinating and interesting and should get their own stories.”
The idea has been suggested. Actor Idris Elba said as recently as last month that a female James Bond would be great because "everybody would like to see" something new happen with the character. Why? The James Bond franchise is the third most popular in movie history and the most recent offering, Spectre was the second highest for any James Bond movie ever. Audiences aren't sick of this suave example of traditional masculinity. Sorry, beta males.
