KRAUSS: ______ Is a Women's Issue

What happened to things simply being issues and then coming up with common-sense solutions to deal with them?

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, former NASA astronaut Mark Kelly, have now told us that gun control is an important women’s issue.

As a woman I am tired of people dubbing anything a “women’s issue.” What happened to things simply being issues and then coming up with common-sense solutions to deal with them?

Before I get attacked for going after a woman who has endured and survived a horrific ordeal, please know that I think Giffords and Kelly’s love, commitment and passion for each other and their cause is amazing. I just think their ire is aimed in the wrong direction.

Giffords said at an event in New York City this week that gun violence is dangerous for women, stating, “Criminals with guns, stalkers with guns, abusers with gun that makes gun violence a women’s issue. For mothers, for families, for me and you.”

I agree with part of what Giffords stated; as a mother I do indeed care about keeping criminals, stalkers, abusers and violence away from my daughter. I believe the best way to do that is to allow a decent law-abiding mother (aka woman) like me have a weapon in the first place.

Every day we read reports about Moms Demand Action and other groups wanting to keep guns out of public places. Their latest stunt was demanding Target prevent customers from carrying in their stores because some lunatic left a gun behind in a toy aisle. This idiot, by the way, unlawfully obtained his weapon. So MDM wants you and me to be unable to protect our kids against a guy who already broke the law once and would probably have disobeyed Target’s rule had they had one in place.

If one day my daughter were to come across a gun on a toy shelf, I’d expect her to be able to know what it is, tell the right people and move on unscathed.  Heck, I’d be really proud if she could properly handle it, empty it and then report it to the adults around. Of course, if they were the MDM buffoons they would probably be running in fear at seeing an empty weapon in the hands of an innocent child.

All too often I encounter women who view guns as manly and evil. Guess what? A gun is no different than a brick or a knife or fists. Whoever is wielding a gun as a weapon to do evil is the bad guy, not the gun. That is the key point Giffords ignored. Jerks who commit domestic abuse are jerks who will use whatever means necessary to wrongfully harm a woman. Taking away a woman’s ability to protect herself is idiotic.

Pre-baby I was smaller and pretty fit. Even on my best day a man my husband’s size could have bested me. Now, post baby, I’m even more vulnerable. My absolute best defense against any attacker is a gun. And the Left wants to take away my best defense.

For some reason my career has brought me to the depths of liberal meccas, New York City and then Los Angeles, where I am unable to carry around my beloved Glock 19.  I often wish I had it, not just for my self-defense but for the safety of others. In California the state assembly is considering a background check before you are able to purchase ammo, because if I throw a .22 hollow-point bullet at your head and it hits you that will do irreparable damage.

Politicians and American society continually choose to embark on a mission to change gun laws over and over and over again and see no positive results.

The drug cartel is still trafficking innocent girls, guns and drugs over the border. Demented and disgusting individuals like John Zawahri who purchased parts and built a gun still do so through loopholes that will always be found or by simply breaking the law.

Meanwhile, women like me are sitting ducks because we obey the inane laws on the books and watch as people like Giffords, and likely Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, try to take our guns away. We are accused of being a minority that wants to “terrorize” our fellow Americans and never looked upon as women and mothers who want to protect and defend our own.

If Gabrielle Giffords and Hillary Clinton really want to discuss a “women’s issue” then they can address their “close” friends at Planned Parenthood who are stumping for the murder of babies using sex-selective abortions.

But alas, now I am joining the band wagon of creating a “women’s issue” when truly, this is an everyone issue.
