Left-wing academic and MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry told an audience at Cornell University on Monday that she hoped Trayvon Martin knew about Florida's self-defense laws and "whooped the sh*t out of George Zimmerman."

Harris-Perry, a politics professor at Wake Forest University, is either unaware that Trayvon Martin did in fact beat George Zimmerman, before Zimmerman shot him, or feigning ignorance for political purposes. In a speech meant to honor Martin Luther-King, Perry, who often deals with racial issues on her MSNBC show, went off on her hope that Martin beat up Zimmerman.

“I hope he tried to stay alive, I hope he knew that he lived in a state with a Stand Your Ground Law, and I hope he whooped the sh*t out of George Zimmerman…cause he encountered a stranger who was prepared to kill him, and you know how I know? Because he killed him.”

Court testimony and medical records show that Martin did beat Zimmerman prior to being shot. Photos taken shortly after the shooting show Zimmerman's head bloodied.

Trayvon Martin was not the only topic that Harris-Perry discussed at Cornell; a list of topics published by The Ithica Voice lists topics as diverse as the Tea Party and urban art.

“The one thing that is good about the Tea Party is that they understand you have a right to speak even if you have lost," Perry said.
