Yale College Republicans Hold BBQ to Troll Liberal 'Hunger Strikers'

Which will it be: a juicy burger or whiny liberal condescension?

Last week, I wrote about the "hunger strike" some grad students at Yale University conducted in order to get better union benefits. "Yale wants to make us wait and wait and wait … until we give up and go away," the eight members of the graduate student union Local 33 announced. "We have committed ourselves to waiting without eating." Well, the Yale College Republicans weren't going to let this occur without a little trolling. When the "hunger strike" commenced, the College Republicans decided to throw a cookout... right beside the "hunger strike."

The College Republicans served barbecued beef, corn, and baked beans on the plaza, so the aroma of that food wafted over to the Local 33 table. "Trolling" is a trend in politics that has taken off since Donald Trump's perfection of the art form. Chris Cillizza defined it as going "after a point of perceived weakness or insecurity relentlessly and without remorse." For example, Trump famously trolled other Presidential candidates by creating nicknames for them -- Lyin' Ted, Crooked Hillary, Little Marco, and so forth. Most recently, he trolled Elizabeth Warren while speaking at the NRA convention in Atlanta:

Yale College Republicans' BBQ is an excellent example of conservatives trying their hand at trolling too. The only way their trolling could've been better? Apparently, the Yale grad "hunger strike" was not the kind of strike that required actually getting hungry:

Based on their instructions that protestors who got too hungry could take a break, maybe some of the protesters could just pop over to the Young Republican grill every once in a while. Regardless of their loose definition of "hunger strike," a few of the students claimed they hadn't eaten in days.

The New Haven Register asked Local 33 chairman Aaron Greenberg what he thought about the conservative cookout. “I’m not really focused on that,” he said. “I’m focused on making sure we have lots of water, make sure I’m healthy. We have a check-in with our nurse this afternoon. We are focused on that.”

Don't let a little whiff of that nearby BBQ affect your focus, Chairman Greenberg.
