WaPo: Hannity 'Wins Spring Break'

Heavily-mocked spring break expose leads to calls for reform

When Sean Hannity's expose on Spring Break aired last month, it was heavily mocked by the Daily Show, among others, as being sensational, exploitative, and obvious. But as the Washington Post's Erik Wemple points out, the residents who live in the area took it very seriously.

Dennis Pillion of AL.com has been reporting on the reaction of residents, who now want changes to be made to the laws governing the Panama City Beach area.

According to Pillion, "Residents have been packing almost every public meeting in Panama City Beach since the Hannity report aired to demand the city (and Bay County) make changes to spring break laws."

In a chat with the Erik Wemple Blog, Mike Thomas, the Bay County commissioner whose district includes Panama City Beach, stresses that a crackdown on spring break activities has been on tap for years. That said, Thomas says he has “no problem” with the spotlight that came from “Hannity” earlier this year. With pressure stemming from the popular Fox News program, says Thomas, “we’ll get a consensus a lot quicker than I was able to get one.” And: “This will put more pressure on people to move a little quicker.”

All of this has led Wemple, no fan of Hannity's, to declare that Hannity "wins spring break."
