During the Young African Leaders Initiative summit Monday, President Obama appeared to decry the practice of harvesting human body parts even though he has remained deafeningly silent on the recent revelations of the practice of the same by Planned Parenthood.
At the event, a woman stood up and asked the president to bring an end to violence against the most vulnerable of Africans: "Persons with albinism in Africa are being killed and their body parts harvested for ritual purposes. My request to you is to raise this issue with heads of state of African countries to bring these atrocities to an end.”
Obama began meandering through his response, first with a quick off-topic stop on racism:
Can I just say -- the notion that any African would discriminate against somebody because of the color of their skin after what black people around the world have gone through is crazy. It is infuriating and I have no patience for it.
He then explained that though there are some important traditions leftover in different cultures that deserve respect, others are "based in ignorance and they need to stop." He added that targeting someone for their pigmentation is "tomfoolery," "it's craziness," and "it's cruel."
Obama got closer to an admission when speaking about the practice of genital mutilation:
That just has to stop. You don't do violence to young girls…
From there, the president took a giant left turn and headed down the road of decrying domestic violence, discrimination against the disabled and sexual orientation -- something he tried connecting to the woman's comment but was blatantly ignoring.
The president then encouraged the young people gathered to be the force that changes old traditions, saying:
You are strong by taking care of the people that are vulnerable, by looking after the minority, looking after the disabled, looking after the vulnerable. You’re not strong by putting people down, you’re strong by lifting them up. That’s the measure of a leader.
