At the GOP primary debate last night, Chris Wallace opened the evening by asking all the candidates if they would pledge to support the GOP nominee and not run as a third party candidate. Trump was the only one to refuse to take the pledge.
"I will not make the pledge at this time," Trump said.
Writes USA Today, "The only one to refuse the request, Trump said he has to 'respect the person' who prevails, though he added that he expects to claim the GOP nomination himself."
Later on after the debate on the Sean Hannity show, Trump explained his answer.
Trump said that he refused to take the pledge to not run as a third-party candidate because he didn't want to give up his leverage with the Republican Party.
"If they don't treat me well, Sean, why should I make that pledge?" Trump asked. "At this moment, it's great leverage, and I might as well use it."
"I just want to be treated well and treated with respect."
