Trailer for D’Souza’s New Film ‘America’ Highlights Polarized Views of Country

"This moment of American triumph is very fragile..."

Conservative filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza has released the trailer for his new documentary America, which highlights two deeply polarized views of America.

On the left is the belief that America is a genocidal, greedy, colonizing force that has taken on the role of the new “Evil Empire.” This view looks upon Mt. Rushmore and sees a “symbol of oppression and genocide” of Native Americans and minorities, and dismisses the financial achievements of the country as based on "theft" and "plunder."

On the right is the view espoused by D’Souza that America has been the world’s advocate and example of freedom and economic mobility, but whose increasingly “fragile” state requires renewed optimism and strength from the American people to maintain.

D’Souza’s previous documentary, 2016: Obama’s America, a psychoanalytical critique of Barack Obama’s political ideology, earned $33 million at the box office in 2012, making it the second highest grossing political documentary all time (behind Moore’s Fareinheit 911).

The next year, in the middle of the production of America, D’Souza was arraigned for illegal campaign contributions. D'Souza and his production team suspected the charges were intended to serve as political retribution for their unflattering critique of the president and a deterrent for the release of their new film. At the time of the arraignment, America’s co-producer Gerald Molen told The Hollywood Reporter that the team remained undeterred by the administration’s attempts at intimidation:

When American citizens begin to suspect that people are being arrested for alleged minor violations because of their vocal dissent against their elected representatives or rulers, it breeds disrespect and contempt for the law and suspicion of those officials. If this unfortunate action against Dinesh is intended to deter the release of his upcoming film, America, that effort will fail.

America is produced and written by D’Souza, directed by John Sullivan (co-director of 2016), and co-produced by Molen and Gray Frederickson. It is scheduled to release on the Fourth of July.
