The movie Gosnell – about the life of convicted abortionist Kermit Gosnell – has begun its first week of filming after a rigorous pre-production process.

Produced by husband and wife duo Phelim McAleer and Anne McElhinney, the movie has been funded entirely by donors, gaining a total of $2.3 million dollars from 26, 574 contributors, making it one of the most successful crowdfunding campaigns in history.

The film will star Dean Cain, who may best known as Superman from the TV show Lois and Clark, as investigative detective James Woods. Actor Michael Beach from the hit film Soul Food and FX show Sons of Anarchy will play the District Attorney.

In the infamous role of Kermit Gosnel will be actor Earl Billings, best known for his work as Rob on the 70's TV show What's Happening!

"The actors are fantastic," said McAleer. "They have incredible skills and enthusiasm for the truthfulness of the story."

Nick Searcy, from the FX show Justified, will be in the director's chair. Former TruthRevolt mascot Andrew Klavan penned the script.

The film has reportedly gotten off to a successful first week of filming, with the producers currently gathering extras to shoot a church wedding scene in Oklahoma City on Saturday. The film is expected for release some time in 2016.
