Continuing the leftist media’s breathtaking assault on President Trump and the Republican Party, Time Magazine’s October 26th cover features multiple ball-like illustrations of Donald Trump’s head hanging from a chain with the title “The Wrecking Crew: How Trump’s Cabinet is Dismantling Government As We Know It.”
The fearmongering is astonishing, if predictable. But far be it from Time to cover the Trump administration fairly. It is, after all, the publication that pictured a melting head of Trump with the caption “Meltdown” on its cover, and later a puddled version accompanied by “Total Meltdown.”
Time’s newest attack on Trump includes items addressing three members of Trump’s inner circle: EPA Scott Truitt, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, and HUD Secretary Ben Carson. In an absurd attempt to scare readers, the cover story begins with “While Trump Is Tweeting, These 3 People Are Undoing American Government as We Know It.” The suggestion, obviously, is that the President is distracted by the self-centered minutiae of speaking his mind on Twitter, and all the while Carson, Truitt, and DeVos are sinisterly destroying the basic structure of the machine room that runs America.
Of course, leave it to the Left to portray the prospect of a new government paradigm as frightening. They easily forget that government does nothing particularly well, and that government spending — thanks to Obama — is more disproportionately inefficient than ever before. Trump’s cabinet is hardly tearing down and rebuilding the government; nevertheless, Deputy Washington Bureau Chief and Senior Correspondent Massimo Calabresi write:
“For most of the year since Trump's stunning election win, his pronouncements have commanded the public's attention the way an unexpected announcement does on a long plane ride. But on the ground, things have been happening. Quietly, the Administration has taken thousands of actions, affecting everyone from the poorest day laborer to the richest investment banker. And it's touting its work."
However, the work the Trump administration is doing is in favor of government deregulation, which is a sorely needed new direction in Washington:
"‘No President or Administration has deregulated or withdrawn as many anticipated regulatory actions as this one in this short amount of time,’ says White House communications director Hope Hicks.”
This is good news. And Trump is peeling back regulation in two ways. One is his use of the Congressional Review Act, signed into effect by Democratic President Bill Clinton in 1996. The CRA allows Trump to review and remove "rules adopted as far back as June 3, 2016," which he has utilized. Furthermore, Trump’s January 30th Executive Order announced to agencies that “for every one new regulation issued, at least two prior regulations [are to] be identified for elimination.”
Moreover, according to the Daily Wire, Trump’s move toward less regulation has effectively only resulted in no increase in regulation:
“The Mercatus Center's Patrick McLaughlin ... studied the total 'output of regulatory restrictions promulgated in the last several presidencies, going back to Jimmy Carter,' and found that Trump had managed to make the net increase of regulatory restrictions 'zero.'”
Time’s coverage of Carson and DeVos is relatively benign, but the magazine sharply attacks Pruitt via writer Justin Worland. A few examples:
"The sharp turn at the EPA and Pruitt's close ties to the industry have raised questions about whose interests the agency is protecting."
"The change has also weakened an agency designed to save lives."
"In most cases, Pruitt does not argue that regulations have no benefits. Instead, he attacks them as inconsistent with the letter of the law and argues that the economic costs outweigh the benefits." (Only the Left would view this as incriminating.)
Finally, Worland writes, "The chemicals and pollutants spilling into our air and water will not just disappear when a new EPA chief comes to town." Despite the drama of that statement, the reality is that pollutants have been decreasing for 50 years, and will continue to do so.
But don’t tell that to Time Magazine. Or the leftist media in general. They want America afraid. They want Trump gone. And they’ll commit to whichever narrative accomplishes that the fastest. Regardless of how false it truly is.
