Saturday Night Live writer Katie Rich has been suspended from the sketch comedy show indefinitely for a highly mean-spirited tweet against President Donald Trump's son Barron.
Barron Trump has been the target of unfair, even cruel jokes since Trump became the President-elect back in November, beginning with Rosie O'Donnell speculating about the 10-year-old's potential autism, then trolls comparing him to Game of Thrones villain King Joffrey, and others calling a spawn of Satan. It came to a very cruel crescendo last Friday when Katie Rich of SNL tweeted this charming piece of hate:
Rich's tweet quickly went viral among media outlets and people did not take kindly to it, given that children should be off limits to political attacks. She then immediately deleted her account following the firestorm while 79,000 people signed a Change.org petition for her firing.
Hired in 2013 as a writer for the "Weekend Update" segment, Rich has been suspended indefinitely from SNL, issuing an apology after restoring her Twitter account. All of her previous tweets are gone.
"I sincerely apologize for the insensitive tweet. I deeply regret my actions & offensive words. It was inexcusable & I’m so sorry," she tweeted.
Even Chelsea Clinton, having been in Barron's situation as a kid, has come to his defense, telling people to aim their sights elsewhere.
"Barron Trump deserves the chance every child does - to be a kid,” she wrote on Facebook. "Standing up for every kid also means opposing POTUS policies that hurt kids."
