After a “watershed” year for feminism in 2014, left-wing outlet Slate fears that an anti-feminist backlash is coming.
According to Slate’s Amanda Marcotte, last year saw feminism gain traction culturally, with the movement even becoming “downright trendy” in pop culture and women “getting more effective at controlling their own fertility.” But pointing to the cyclical history of the movement, Marcotte warns that 2015 might see pushback from the anti-women far-right, specifically against Hillary Clinton, rape victims, and abortion.
On the largely gender-based “right-wing hatred of Hillary”:
The right wing hatred of Hillary Clinton has a lot to do with her gender, and her feminism. Though anti-Hillary sentiment is already churning in right wing media and online, expect it to explode once Clinton formally announces.
On the threat posed to rape victims by Rolling Stone’s journalistic malpractice:
The unraveling of a Rolling Stone exposé on rape at the University of Virginia should not be, but could be used to squelch discussion of campus sexual assault going forward.
On the potential for the Supreme Court to help legislate legal abortion “out of existence”:
With all eyes on Justice Kennedy, the Supreme Court could easily rule in favor of the new abortion restrictions in Texas, opening the door to red states across the country legislating legal abortion out of existence.
