Senior Newsweek Writer Kurt Eichenwald nearly melted when confronted by Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Thursday night, who only wanted his guest to substantiate a claim he made on Twitter about Donald Trump being institutionalized in a mental hospital.

For nearly 10 minutes, Eichenwald danced around a very simple question over a claim he had made on Twitter. He wrote, “I believe Trump was institutionalized in a mental hospital for a nervous breakdown in 1990 which is why he won’t release his medical records.” When Carlson asked for proof, Eichenwald refused to answer for the entire segment.

Instead, the Newsweek writer thought the proper question a journalist should ask is, “Why did you send that tweet?” And that’s the only way he would answer. But Carlson held his feet to the fire and demanded to know if Trump was ever admitted to a mental hospital or not. Of course, that answer never came. Instead, Eichenwald came prepared with what looked like a binder full of “Tucker Carlson Falsehoods.” He threatened to open it but never did. He kept telling Carlson, “If you don’t like the answers, don’t have guests.”

The mental gymnastics Eichenwald employed to wriggle out of the question is the perfect commentary on the state of media distrust in America. This is a senior writer at an established national news publication and all he could do is criticize a fellow journalist for asking a yes or no question.

“How can Newsweek employ you as a reporter, Kurt, when you’re throwing lines like this around that are untrue that you can’t substantiate?” Carlson asked. He added, “When you say to the president’s spokesman, ‘F—You,’ that’s not the behavior of a reporter.”
