After several female lawmakers, including Barbara Boxer and Elizabeth Warren, told tales of enduring sexual harassment from male colleagues in Washington during their careers, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) thinks its time to end that “scourge” for good by instituting mandatory training on sexual harassment.

Schumer told The Daily Beast, “We agree with that. It should happen. We want it to happen. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), the [minority party’s] head of Rules Committee, is going to put together a proposal, hopefully with [Senator Richard] Shelby (R-AL), and we will make it happen.”

Schumer’s support for efforts to force sexual harassment trainings gives a boost to those in Congress hoping to quickly address the problem, both within its own halls and outside of it. On Tuesday, a bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced a Senate resolution that would make sexual harassment programs mandatory for all employees of the chamber. Klobuchar was among the signatories, along with Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley. Despite Schumer’s hopes, Shelby is not, thought that could change.

Schumer said sexual harassment is a “scourge” that needs to be addressed, not only in Hollywood but in the halls of Washington. 

“[We should be doing] everything we can to stop this,” the senator said. “If it is here on the Hill it ought to be treated the same way as anywhere else.”

It should be pointed out that Schumer was on the receiving end of thousands of campaign dollars by way of Hollywood’s most notorious (for now) serial sexual abuser Harvey Weinstein. He says he has donated that money to programs that help young women who have been abused. Does that make him part of the scourge?
