I'm going to tread lightly here, because I don't want to incur the wrath of any of her fans among our readers, but someone needs to point out that Kate Upton might have been wrong about something. I'm not going to malign her intelligence herein, just suggest that perhaps somebody needs to educate her on both firearms and abortion, because she compared the two in a way that could be perceived as not very bright. Other than that, I'm sure she's a bright and lovely woman with far more than her boobs beauty to recommend her.
Upton posted a familiar quote by feminist icon Gloria Steinem on Tuesday morning that read:
I want any young men who buy a gun to be treated like young women who seek an abortion. Think about it: a mandatory 48-hours waiting period, written permission from a parent or a judge, a note from a doctor proving that he understands what he is about to do, time spent watching a video on individual and mass murders, traveling hundreds of miles and his own expense to the nearest gun shop, and walking through protestors(sic) holding photos of loved ones killed by guns, protestor (sic) who call him a murderer. After all, it makes more sense to do this for young men seeking guns than for young women seeking an abortion. No young women needing reproductive freedom has ever murdered a roomful of strangers.
Oh, Kate. Kate, Kate, Kate. I don't even know where to start, so let's just start at the beginning. “Young men who want to buy a gun?” Lots of people buy guns, not just people who are young or male. In fact, More women, particularly black women, are buying guns than ever before. Now, for what's required when getting an abortion, this information only refers to minors. Some states do require parental permission if the person seeking an abortion is a minor but, since the left is forever pushing that this is a medical procedure, that's in keeping with any other. If you don't want to tell your parents, you can get “judicial bypass,” where in a judge grants permission. With a few very specific exceptions, minors cannot own a rifle or shotgun, and handguns and handgun ammunition require the owner to be aged 21.
So, congratulations, Kate, guns are more difficult for this demographic to get.
With most medical procedures, the practitioner shows the patient imaging (if it exists) before the procedure. An x-ray, a CT scan or, yes, an ultrasound. I've seen lots of them on myself, none of them involving pregnancy. Again, if you consider this to be a medical procedure (and even if you don't), why would you wish for women to be uninformed? Anyone who thinks that they're on the right side of an argument should feel that it stands up to a person having more information regarding that decision.
As for the distance and expense to get to a gun shop versus an abortion practitioner, that's very true. If you wish to end the life of your unborn child, it might not be convenient. She also seems to be ignoring (or doesn't know) that the reason more travel is required is that clinics have closed down due to safety regulations. The baby is going to lose its life, and these clinics didn't meet safety standards for the mother. You're welcome. So, to get an abortion, a woman will need to think about it and work for it, and I'm really not sorry about that. Guns still require some work to get (more than Ms. Upton seems to think), but as each successful gun purchase doesn't mean ending a life, not as much.
Moving along. I'm not a huge fan of the aggressive protesters outside of abortion clinics, either, but nor am I a fan of the gun protesters Ms. Upton seems to think don't exist. We're harassed constantly for wanting to participate in a sport or take charge of our own safety.
Now, for the ending. I don't know if any woman who has had an abortion has ever murdered a room full of strangers, but let's say this is correct for the sake of argument. So what? No law-abiding gun owner has done that, either, and no law will stop one who doesn't abide by them. Meanwhile, there have been nearly 60 million abortions in the United States since the passage of Roe V Wade as compared to about 1.5 million firearm-related deaths (keeping in mind that some of these were self-defense).
Both tragic numbers, to be sure, but I'll take mine against hers any day
