Report: Sudanese Woman Sentenced to Death for Her Christian Faith to be Freed

"She will not truly be free…until she is safely on U.S. soil." —Jay Sekulow

Meriam Ibrahim, the imprisoned Sudanese woman who was sentenced to death because she would not denounce her Christian faith and convert to Islam, is now going to be set free, the BBC reports.

An under-secretary of the foreign ministry of Sudan told the BBC that the release will happen in a few days and that they are "committed to protecting the woman."

As TruthRevolt previously reported, the original sentence not only included a death penalty but also 100 lashes for marrying a non-Muslim -- adultery under their law. The lashes were to be conducted after Ibrahim gave birth as she was pregnant at the time of her arrest.

For four months, Ibrahim has been shackled by her legs along with her young son by her side inside a filthy, disease-ridden female prison facility. Last week, Ibrahim was forced to give birth five days early with her legs still shackled. Her husband Daniel Wani, a naturalized U.S. citizen living in New Hampshire, was eventually allowed to hold his newborn daughter and expressed his frustration with his wife's treatment. "They kept a chain on her legs. She is very unhappy about that," Wani told The Telegraph.

So far, the lashes have not been carried out as was sentenced. However, some fear that the release is simply for the government of Sudan to buy some time.

Jay Sekulow of the American Center for Law and Justice believe the announcement of the release is only temporary. Some think that she is only being released to nurse her newborn for two years and then the execution will resume. Ibrahim's attorney agrees:

It’s a statement to silence the international media…This is what the government does. We will not believe that she is being freed until she walks out of the prison…If they were to release her, the announcement would come from the appeal court, and not from the ministry of foreign affairs…We must keep up the pressure.

Global outcry and support through various petitions signed by hundreds and thousands of people are hoping to do just that. Sekulow said she will not be truly free until she is on U.S. soil:

It is also important that the U.S. State Department be ready to grant Meriam asylum immediately upon her release. She will not truly be free, her American children will not be safe, until she is safely on U.S. soil.
