At the White House Correspondents' Dinner, President Obama introduced his very own "anger translator" who gave vocalizations to the president's inner thoughts during his speech.
Luther the translator (played by Comedy Central's Keegan-Michael Key) told those in attendance, "Hold on to your lily white butts." And the audience was delighted.
Luther echoed each of Obama's comments, targeting the usual suspects:
OBAMA: Because despite our differences, we count on the press to shed light on the most important issues of the day.
LUTHER: And we can count on Fox News to terrify old white people with some nonsense: "Sharia law is coming to Cleveland! Run for the damn hills!" Y'alls ridiculous!
OBAMA: We won't always see eye to eye.
LUTHER: Oh, and CNN, thank you so much for the wall-to-wall Ebola coverage. For two whole weeks, we were one step away from The Walking Dead. And then y'all got up and moved on to the next thing. That was awesome. Oh, and by the way, just if you haven't noticed, you don't have Ebola!!
OBAMA: But I still deeply appreciate the work that you do.
LUTHER: Y'all remember when I had that big ol' hole in the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico? And then I plugged it?! Remember that? Which "Obama's Katrina" was that one? Was it 19 or 20? Because I can't remember.
OBAMA: But we do need to stay focused on some big challenges like climate change.
LUTHER: Hey listen, y'all, if you haven't noticed, California is bone dry! It look like a trailer for the new Mad Max movie up in there. Y'all think that Bradley Cooper came here 'cause he wants to talk to Chuck Todd? He needed a glass of water!! Come on!
OBAMA: The science is clear -- nine out of the 10 hottest years ever came in the last decade.
LUTHER: Now I'm not a scientist, but I do know how to count to 10.
OBAMA: Rising seas, more violent storms…
LUTHER: You got mosquitoes, sweaty people on the train stinking it up, it's just nasty!
OBAMA: I mean, look at what's happening right now. Every serious scientist says we need to act. [increasing in anger] The Pentagon says it's a national security risk. Miami floods on a sunny day and instead of doing anything about it, we got elected officials throwing snowballs in the Senate!
LUTHER: Okay, Mr. President, I, I, think I've got it bro.
OBAMA: Now it is crazy!! What about our kids? What kind of stupid, short sighted, irresponsible bull...
LUTHER: Sir! Whoa, whoa, whoa!! Woah! Hey!
OBAMA: What?!
LUTHER: All due respect, sir, you don't need an anger translator, you need counseling. [walks over to Michelle Obama and says] He's crazy.
But if insult comedy is more your thing, SNL's Cecily Strong delivered in her 20-plus minute routine. Like comedian Joel McHale at last years correspondents' dinner, Strong's insults brought plenty of jeers. As C-SPAN's cameras panned the audience, faces were unable to hide their disapproval throughout the routine.
Strong spent a good majority her time defending her gender and pining for a Hillary Clinton presidency. The usual suspects, Republicans and Fox News, were easy targets for her as well.
Some highlights from her speech:
"Feels right to have a woman follow President Obama doesn't it?"
"I'm also the first straight woman to host this in 20 years, so, we finally made it, straight people. Where my heterosexuals at, huh?
"Just because I'm a woman, doesn't mean I'm going to go easy on you people. I'm going to go easy on you because my brain is smaller."
"I hope everyone enjoyed dinner. We tried to get Memories Pizza to cater this event, but they heard a rumor Barney Frank might be here. So, thanks a lot, Barney. We could've had that world famous Indiana pizza."
"[The Secret Service is] the only law enforcement agency in the country that will get in trouble if a black man gets shot."
"Fox News is here. Now Fox News has been losing a lot of viewers recently and may they rest in peace."
"NBC is here. You know, even us at SNL got criticized for making fun of ISIS. Now, I think that's unfair. I mean, if anyone is guilty of taking ISIS too lightly it's umm…you know [nods to Obama]"
"Senator Tom Cotton got 47 other Senators to sign an open letter he wrote to Iran. And I guess the most surprising thing is that a guy named Tom Cotton is a U.S. senator and not a rabbit from an old racist Disney cartoon. 'Oh, please Brer Bear don't throw ol' Tom Cotton in the briar patch.'"
"Repeat after me… I solemnly swear not to talk about Hillary's appearance because that is not journalism."
"Enough talk about 2016. Let's talk about the most important person in the room -- my leader, the person I'm so glad is in the White House, Michelle Obama. Now Michelle, you take care of that garden while you can, because in 18 months, you know Bill's turning that thing into an above-ground pool."
