The White House Situation Room is designated for use by the president, his top national security advisors, and chief of staff to deal securely with major crises. Typically, the Situation Room is used as a base from which to strategize and carry out orders related to significant homeland threats and missions -- like, for instance, with the Osama bin Laden raid:
...or the TWA hijacking in 1985:
...or to deal with issues relating to the Iraq War:
Today, however, the Situation Room is the perfect place to sit and reflect quietly on the perils of climate change.
During a speech delivered Friday at the 2016 Our Ocean Conference," President Barack Obama spoke of how the nation's security is dependent on a healthy planet and that, thanks to his trusted Secretary of State John Kerry, climate change is now discussed in the Situation Room. Remarks are transcribed by the White House and the Media Research Center provides the video clip featured above:
"I am obviously grateful to John Kerry for a whole host of reasons. But one thing that we all owe to John is his conviction that a healthier ocean and a healthier planet are about more than just our environment; they are also vital to our foreign policy and to our national security.
So he has elevated the profile of climate change, ocean protection to the point where we have conversations about this not just in the Oval Office, but in the Situation Room. And that is critical in helping us mobilize all of government around the issues that all of you care so deeply about."
Obama then droned on about how humans have raped the planet with pollution and "unsustainable fishing practices," among other transgressions, resulting in rendering entire species extinct.
I suppose they might as well use it for global warming since they don't seem to be using it for discussing actual terrorism.
