Obama Panned for Calling White House 'My House'

It's the People's House

In the heat of the moment while being heckled by a transgender person at a pro-LGBT event at the White House, President Obama let slip an acute misunderstanding of the distribution of power in America. Though the White House is truly the People's House -- as in "We the People…" -- Obama, in his attempt to quiet the outburst, said, "Listen, you're in my house."

Conservative media reaction was swift.

"The People's House? Nah. 'MY house!'" reads Joseph Curl's headline at The Washington Times. Hot Air's Ed Morrissey deferred to the Twitter account known as Popehat to fill in the blanks left unfilled by the media:

Morrissey added: “My house”? Er, not exactly, Mr. President. That’s the people’s house and you are just being provided room and board for as long as your term lasts. Fortunately, the lease comes up in just under 19 months. Try not to damage the floorboards, and don’t follow the example of the last Democrats in the residence in absconding with the furniture.

And commenters -- regular, everyday Americans -- on these stories seem the most offended. A random sample is below:

It’s good to know The One hasn’t lost his pretentious ego over the years.

Its that sense of entitlement showing.

His house? HIS house? No it isn’t.

No Barry, it is not YOUR HOUSE, it is the People’s House and you are the current interloper living free in public housing.

The White House USED to be the people's house. Now it's HIS house.

NO, Mr. President; you are in OUR house! 1600 Pennsylvania is owned by WE the people. You are only a temporary resident; and don't you forget it!
