Ignoring Congress once again, President Obama is set to sign on Monday an executive order that would ban federal contractors from discriminating against LGBT employees, says an Associated Press report.

There is currently no federal law that explicitly bans workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

For years, gay rights groups and supporters have pressed for laws that protect the LGBT community from discrimination at their jobs. Currently there is a bill passed by the Senate that encompasses broad anti-discrimination measures but has since stalled in the House. Pressure has mounted for the president to act on his own, bypassing Congress, and sign executive orders to bring this to reality.

An unnamed White House official did not offer specifics as to when Obama would sign, only that preparations have been made. Once signed, not all American employees would be protected, only federal contractors. The president does not have the authority to extend the protection to all Americans, the report states.
