Of all politicians that have served in office in America since its founding, and subsequently lied, President Trump is the worst of the bunch, according to David Leonhardt of The New York Times.
“[T]he current president of the United States lies,” Leonhardt writes. “He lies in ways that no American politician ever has before.”
This includes Barack Obama’s “if you like your doctor/plan, you can keep your doctor/plan” lie and George W. Bush’s infamous “weapons of mass destruction” declaration, which the left still deems a lie. Leonhardt excused these two instances with this defense:
I’ve previously argued that not every untruth deserves to be branded with the L-word, because it implies intent and somebody can state an untruth without doing so knowingly. George W. Bush didn’t lie when he said Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, and Obama didn’t lie when he said people who liked their current health insurance could keep it. They made careless statements that proved false (and they deserved much of the criticism they got).
But Trump, he goes on to argue, “sets out to deceive people.”
“He tells so many untruths that it’s time to leave behind the textual parsing over which are unwitting and which are deliberate — as well as the condescending notion that most of Trump’s supporters enjoy his lies,” Leonhardt adds.
Of course, there is no mention of Bill Clinton’s “I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky” even though that was a bold-faced lie in front of America. Nor did Leonhardt bother to mention Hillary Clinton’s lies about Benghazi or her private e-mail server. He also praises FBI Director James Comey “willingness to pursue the truth” in the continuing wiretapping saga despite his unwillingness to pursue charges against the former secretary of state’s crimes.
No, the Trump administration is lying like no other before it: “Our president is a liar, and we need to find out how serious his latest lies are.”
Here’s the obvious takeaway: when a pundit likes a politician, their lies are rewritten as “untruths” or “careless statements,” but when it’s their political enemy, suddenly the lies are just lies. And that’s the consistent inconsistencies of the leftist media.
