On Andrea Mitchell Reports Monday, correspondent Chuck Todd presented a new poll that demonstrates just how out of touch hyper-partisan Washington is from the rest of "moderate" America, eventually leading Todd to admit that the media has misled Americans about the polarization of the country.

In one of the more entertaining segments in recent weeks, Mitchell asked on fellow correspondent Chuck Todd to break down a new Esquire-NBC News poll on American ideology. Their findings? 51% of the country does not clearly align with either of the increasingly divided parties.

Todd presented the study by first highlighting the far left (21%), then shifting to the far right (28%), then moving to the middle (51%).

On the Left (21% total): Bleeding Hearts (10%) and Gospel Left (11%).

On the Right (28% total): Righteous Right (14%) and Talk Radio Heads (14%).

In the Center (51% total): Mini-Van Moderates (14%), MBA Middle (13%), Pickup Populists (12%), and Whateverman (13%).

Todd’s point: D.C. and "middle" America are at odds. Hyper-partisanship doesn’t sit well with a majority of Americans. What does seem to be a unifying theme is "basic fairness."

That may not be groundbreaking findings, but what is signfiicant is Todd's statement at the end, when he admits that the media has misled Americans into believing the country's more polarized than it truly is:

We used to say politics was fought between the forty yard lines ... But what this poll tells us is politics is actually being fought between the 25 yard lines. The two ideological groups are actually much smaller than Washington—and frankly we in the media—have made you believe.
