Welcome to 2015, where even Star Wars “geeks” have the power to make others feel uncomfortable, unsafe.

Yes, major movie theaters planning to screen the upcoming Star Wars epic have placed a ban on moviegoers donning themed costumes while inside the theater. Costumes and accessories that could make other patrons feel "uncomfortable" include Darth Vader masks, blasters, face paint, and light sabers.

Below is a screenshot taken from AMC's website that provides the theater chain's "costume policy."

Cinemark posted a similar admonition. A photo of a sign posted at the theater reads: "no face coverings, face paint, or simulated weapons — including light sabers — will be allowed in the buildings."

The motivation seems obvious enough -- movie theaters have been the target of mass-shootings before. But someone with ill intentions will unfortunately carry out their nefarious goals with or without costume bans. Just as they would carry them out with or without tighter gun controls in the country. What results is not successfully curbing truly violent elements within society, but stripping away even life's simple enjoyments.
