The Jewish community is on alert yet again as at least 100 headstones were desecrated at an historic Jewish cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.

Police first responded to the vandalism at Chesed Shel Emeth Society cemetery on Monday morning, though of course have yet to officially declare the incident a hate crime. For weeks across the nation, there has been a spate of bomb threats against Jewish Community Centers (JCCs), including 11 additional threats reported this past Monday. 

Lt. Fredrick Lemons said investigators are reviewing surveillance camera footage and Governor Eric Greitens issued the following statement on the vandalism:

“Today, Missouri witnessed a despicable act of what appears to be anti-Semitic vandalism at Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery.

It is reported that more than 100 headstones were damaged. We do not yet know who is responsible, but we do know this: this vandalism was a cowardly act. And we also know that, together, we can meet cowardice with courage.

Anyone who would seek to divide us through an act of desecration will find instead that they unite us in shared determination. From their pitiful act of ugliness, we can emerge even more powerful in our faith.

Whoever did this slipped into a cemetery in secret to break things. We will stand together in the open to rebuild them, stronger.”

Chesed's executive director said they have received an outpouring of support from around the country, both moral and financial, and that he plans for the cemetery to pay for as much of the repair costs as possible. 

During remarks at the National African-American History Museum in Washington, DC on Tuesday, President Donald Trump spoke out about anti-Semitism: 

"I think it’s horrible, whether it's anti-Semitism or racism or anything you want to think about having to do with the divide. Anti-Semitism is likewise, it’s just terrible. You don't know where it's coming from but I certainly hope they catch the people. I think you maybe have had it for longer than people think and maybe it gets brought up a little bit more but I will tell you that anti-Semitism is horrible and it's going to stop and it has to stop."
