Montreal Alouettes GM: Football Might Be 'Over' For Michael Sam

Decided to "go home"; team source says he was "pouting" after insult

Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted in the NFL, left in the middle of the Montreal Alouettes training camp in what GM Jim Popp says might be the end of Sam's career.

In a statement to the Montreal Gazette, Popp said simply that Sam left because "he wanted to go home," but added that if he doesn't return he predicts that "football's over for him."

"There's nothing to tell you," Popp told the Gazette. "He wanted to go home, and that's what he did. I don't know why. When a guy wants to go home, they go home. He had some personal things to take care of. I wouldn't be surprised if he returns. I'm surprised he left. I was very surprised. If he doesn't come back, I would think football's over for him. He's the one that has to face that. But I don't think he doesn't want to play football. That's why he came here."

Though the team seemed supportive Friday when the news first broke that Sam had walked out, saying they'd "left the door open" for his return, the Alouettes announced Monday that Sam was now officially on the suspension list.

Sam's agents claimed that he left because he was suffering a migraine; however, the Gazette's sources indicate otherwise. One "team source" suggested that Sam might be leaving because a teammate insulted him.

"All I know is I heard somebody made a comment about him, about how he wasn’t very good and wasn’t having a very good camp. He took it personally and was pouting in his room," said the source. "It’s very strange. I have no idea what’s going on. He might have a personal issue."

Another source dismissed any real chance of Sam reuniting with the Alouettes despite the public statements from the team, and "chided Sam for appearing on the reality TV series 'Dancing With the Stars' instead of preparing for the coming season."

Sam was the first openly gay player drafted by the NFL. He did not end up actually playing in a game, as he was cut by the St Louis Rams during prior to his first season.  He was picked up by the Cowboys and worked briefly with their practice squad, but again was released again. Sam made several highly publicized statements, including claiming that there are "a lot" of gay players in the NFL and at one point suggesting that he was not in the NFL in part because he was gay.
