As reported by Fox News, the former secretary of state warned that she was about to get "grossly generalistic," then said, "You could put half of Trump's supporters into what I all 'a basket of deplorables,' right?" As the audience laughed, cheered, and applauded, she went on to describe those Trump supporters as "racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, you name it."
It's the standard Alinsky strategy Hillary knows so well: demonize and marginalize the enemy.
Then she added, with faux sympathy, that the other half of his supporters were just frustrated that "the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them."
To clarify the reality of the state of our union: it's actually the Democratic party that has let the entire country down, but I digress.
"They are just desperate for change," she continued. No argument there, Hillary. "They don't buy everything he says, but he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different."
Clinton went on to urge the crowd to "stage an intervention" if they have friends considering voting Republican. "That may be one conversion therapy I'd endorse." Get the joke? It's a dog whistle to her LGBT audience.
Fox News also reported that former singer and longtime Democrat fundraiser Barbra Streisand, who performed at the event, altered the lyrics of Stephen Sondheim's "Send In The Clowns" to mock Trump, referring to the candidate as a "sad, vulgar clown." Good one, Barbara! Don't quit your day job.
Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway subsequently tweeted a response to Hillary's remarks:
Trump spokesman Jason Miller also replied, in a statement, that Clinton had "revealed her true contempt for everyday Americans." He called her comments an "inexcusable mistake":
Hillary's spokesman Nick Merrill defended her in a tweet of his own:
"Obviously not everyone supporting Trump is part of the alt-right, but alt-right leaders are with Trump... And their supporters appear to make up half his crowd when you observe the tone of his events."
