Media Hall of Shame: MSNBC's Thomas Roberts

Congratulations, sir. You've more than earned it.

MSNBC is a natural source for nominees to the Media Hall of Shame. With the extreme leftwing bias, the over-the-top hosts, and a long and documented history of outrages, errors, and just plain liberal lunacy, it is hard to find an on-air personality with the network that would not qualify. Knowing that, and seeing the dismal ratings that it produces, the network this year tried to shake things up by dropping a few daytime hosts and adding in anchors. So they were ditching the left-wing hosts for real journalism, got it?

One of the anchors brought in for the news of the day is Thomas Roberts, formerly host of Way Too Early on the network, to help transition to a more "traditional news day." Thomas Roberts, brought in by MSNBC, to help right the ship from its leftward keel.

Last week, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of gay marriage nationwide, and the network's journalists including Roberts - himself in a gay marriage - were there to report on the story. Here is an example of some of the coverage, via Digitas Daily.

Did you catch the air quotes? That's news folks. Faith is "faith" and tenets are "tenets." The visible contempt is compounded by the meat of the discussion, which is the anchor agreeing with the guest that the religion of Catholicism needs to just accept a new, not Biblical premise, because reasons. It's not a sin, the two decree. This is an example of Roberts' straight news coverage.

In light of that moment of clarity, Truth Revolt looked into some of Roberts' past reporting to see just how on the level the "anchor" (air quotes!!) keeps it. Readers will not be surprised we found the answer is "not very."

POLITICS

Roberts is not in any way secretive about his politics. He is brought on to debate other political commentators as a guest on Morning Joe, as seen in this exchange about Duck Dynasty where he breaks dismissive and sarcastic.

Sarcasm is one of his tools of choice, as is true of most on the left. Note his "Seriously, that happened" segment where he suggests that Dr. Ben Carson should probably just not "speak aloud." Of course, it's not just on-air where it comes out. He also attacks politicians via social media, as seen in this (again) sarcastic jab at Liz Cheney.

In fact, not only is he open about his politics, but Roberts, who clearly thinks he is sly and clever, wisecracks about the very idea of his own objective journalism, as seen in this clip from Wanda Sykes.

Republicans are suppressing the minority vote and remember that when you go vote, he suggests. Then he laughingly, and somewhat jokingly, offers journalistic objectivity as a reason not to answer who he'll be voting for. Host Wanda Sykes shares a good chuckle with him over that. Yes, we know too, Wanda.

ADVOCACY

Thomas Roberts is gay, and he is married to his partner. It makes sense and should be obvious, then, that he is in favor of gay marriage. But when a reporter or journalist claims their impartiality - say, for example, by not saying who they will vote for or suggesting that they won't vote - they aren't claiming they have no feelings on the matter. Rather they are claiming they won't allow their personal opinion to get in the way of their reporting. As a journalist, Roberts should be able to report on gay marriage as a journalist. Of course, many in the news business have trouble with this, and minor transgressions happen frequently. But Thomas Roberts goes far beyond such "your slip is showing" moments. He acts as an activist and advocate from the anchor chair. Especially on this issue.

Note again in the video above how he asks the guest how "we" can get marriage equality. It's not his first such moment. Hollywood blog "The Wrap" noted his participation in the story last week. The examples of his advocacy are nearly endless, certainly too numerous to place here, but can best be summed in the words of GLAAD, when they honored him with an award.

Roberts will be presented with the Vito Russo Award – named after one of GLAAD's founders - which is presented to out LGBT media professionals who has made a significant impact in promoting equality for the LGBT community.

Promoting GLAAD's version of equality, which is to say their particular political agenda, is advocacy. Not journalism.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

A lot of people these days claim to be, or are accused of being, "Social Justice Warriors." But there can hardly be a more vital role than on the front lines in the media. For this reason, Roberts is one of the truest SJWs there is. If a business raises prices to pay for mandated increases in the minimum wage, it's just petty revenge. If you are white, you should be ashamed. He literally talks the talk about social 'justice' in open forums.

The fact is, as with his advocacy and his partisan politics, Roberts makes no effort to hide his Social Justice Warrior goals. In his own words:

“We’re having a deeper conversation about social justice in this country and really shining a bright light in dark corners, whether it’s equal pay for women, LGBT rights or immigration reform,” he says. “I feel proud that we get to display those conversations on the show.”

That's Roberts on Roberts. He is copping to it. Of course, as with any true member of the elite media, the rules are for thee, not for he, as you can see from this insane "Way Too Early" clip.

For all these reasons and many, many more, Thomas Roberts is the newest inductee to the Media Hall of Shame. Congratulations to you, sir. You've more than earned it.

Seriously. That happened.

Thanks to The Cable Game, Johnny Dollar's Place, and Newsbusters for their ongoing documentation of media malpractice.
