McCain: I'm 'Ashamed' of President, Country, Myself

Haven't done enough to help “heartbreaking” situation in Ukraine

On CBS’ “Face the Nation” Sunday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said that he is “ashamed” of the way America is responding to the “heartbreaking” situation in Ukraine.

Calling the situation a “shameful chapter” in the history of European and American alliance, McCain accused western leaders of standing by and watching the “dismemberment” of a sovereign country:

McCain: I believe that German chancellor and president of France legitimized for the first time in 70 years the dismemberment of a country in Europe. It’s shameful. Vladimir Putin has not paid any price. […] Vladimir Putin wants Ukraine not to be part of Europe, and he is succeeding in doing so.

McCain underscored that the blame did not fall solely on the European leadership, but on American leadership as well:

McCain: I’m ashamed of my country, I’m ashamed of my president and I’m ashamed of myself, that I haven’t done more to help these people. It is really, really heartbreaking.

When Schieffer pressed McCain on his comment that he was "ashamed" of his country—a sentiment he said he'd “never" heard him express before—the Senator turned the condemnation again on himself, reiterating, “And I’m ashamed of myself.”

McCain said that while he is not calling for boots on the ground, he fully supports providing Ukraine with the weapons it needs to fight the pro-Russian separatists in the East.
