McCain: 'For God's Sake' Give the Ukrainians Some Weapons

"Can't we help these people defend themselves?"

Senator John McCain (R-AZ) made a desperate plea on Sunday's Face the Nation for the American government to help the people of Ukraine against Russia's invading forces.

"For God's sake can't we help these people defend themselves? This is not an incursion. This is an invasion," the senator said.

McCain's comment was in response to CBS News' Major Garrett relaying chatter he's heard from the White House saying weapons are the last thing that region needs because it is making the situation worse.

Garrett then asked the senator if an act of war was committed by Russia against Ukraine. McCain stated the obvious:

I think from the Ukrainian standpoint you would say that. [Putin] is establishing a land bridge all the way to Crimea and he may then threaten Moldova and the Baltics if he continues to succeed.

When you say it's a quote unquote war -- it's a conflict that requires our participation, not through American ground troops, but our participation, our help and our leadership, and that is what seems to be missing. Libya, now, is collapsed into a failed state. That is what happens when you lead from behind, and we are now facing more crises in more parts of the world than at anytime since the Cold War.
