A Florida man accused of threatening to kill Republican state lawmaker Rep. Jose Felix Diaz erupted during his courtroom hearing and rattled off a list of other Republican Party members, including Marco Rubio.
Steve St. Felix, 34, issued his death threat to Diaz via Facebook, writing, “I’ll kill your ass and you better not show up to the next REC [Republican Executive Committee] meeting.” That message came just two weeks after Rep. Steve Scalise was shot and injured at the congressional baseball practice. Diaz was put under surveillance for a day following the threat.
St. Felix was in court Thursday for a mental health evaluation. He apologized for the Facebook post and said he didn't mean it seriously, but was just fed up with the Republican Party, according to CBS Miami. St. Felix said he was not on his meds at the time.
During his appearance, the suspect waved at the camera and smiled just like the above photo just before his outburst, in which he shouted the names of other Republicans and the mayor of Miami: “Marco Rubio! Nelson Diaz! Manny Diaz! Manny Diaz Junior! Carlos Gimenez! (Julio) Robaina.”
St. Felix looked back at the cameraman and made another threat: “Torturing my son, man! Get him outta here. All right cameraman, all right! Marco Rubio, West Miami, right? That’s right, baby!” This continued into the hallway where he was escorted away.
Rep. Diaz watched the courtroom drama unfold and said, “It was shocking to see what happened. I think anybody that watched it saw a gentleman that clearly needs medication. I pray for the gentleman. I hope he gets the appropriate mental health care that he needs right now.”
Diaz added: “Explicitly threatened me more than once, saying that they wanted to kill me. Obviously I am a family man. I have two younger kids and a wife. It was a spooky thing to see. Because he has a history of mental illness and a criminal record, so there was a perfect recipe for us to be concerned.”
