On his show today, the king of talk radio offered up, in as unassuming a way possible, what turns out to actually be a rather devastating criticism of Donald Trump after his recent criticism of Ted Cruz as a "maniac" who doesn't play well with others.
One thing, you know, my questioning here about the way Trump has gone after Cruz here, calling a maniac refusing to work with people in the Senate .. the reason I'm focusing on that folks, because that's so unlike Trump. That's a huge mistake. On paper it's a huge mistake. Trump gets away with his mistakes. Such is the bond of loyalty that his support base has for him that he gets away with them. And I don't think he's made that many, don't misunderstand.
But for any of you who are holding out hope that Trump is a genuine conservative. Genuine conservative, even in the Republican field, would not go after Cruz this way. So, that's, it just raised a red flag for me, made me somewhat curious
That bit about Trump's fans forgiving any and all mistakes might be viewed as somewhat of an understatement. So far Trump has proven immune to all the normal, and even the less than normal, attacks one endures in politics. Whether it is his record, his support of non-conservative ideas and policies, his non-PC speech, or pretty much anything else, Trump has been essentially impervious.
Still, the fact that Trump's criticism of Cruz comes from, if not the left, at least the establishment point of view strikes at something that is deeply in the core of Trump voters.

And Rush is correct of course. As I said this morning, the attack on Cruz amounts to Trump criticizing him for not playing ball with the establishment and the Democrats. I would say "that won't sell well with Trump's fans" but, as Rush notes, most have long since passed the point where Trump can do wrong in their eyes. If he says "yay GOP" then so will they.
If nothing else, it will definitely provide fodder for blogs and news sites like TruthRevolt, cable news shows, and talk radio for a while. Which will be, after all, just more coverage for Donald Trump.
