Monday night's Washington Redskins victory over their rival the Dallas Cowboys was no doubt a highly rated television broadcast in the DC/Maryland and Virginia market. And the viewers in Virginia saw the debut of a new political ad from GOP Senate candidate Ed Gillespie focusing specifically on the NFL franchise and the PC controversy over their mascot.
Gillespie points out the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) proposed a bill that would force the team to change their name due to politically correct sensibilities that dictate the name is insensitive, at best, and racist at worst.
Gillespie takes aim at incumbent Sen. Mark Warner (D) who “refused to answer if he supports the bill or not.” The narration of the ad asks, “Why won’t Warner fight the anti-Redskins bill? Why won’t he answer the question?”
Gillespie then speaks directly to Redskins fans and promises, “I’ll oppose the anti-Redskins bill. Let’s focus on creating jobs, raising take-home pay, and making our nation safer, and let the Redskins handle what to call their team.”
As Free Beacon points out, Warner has other problems with Virginia's favorite sports franchise. The first term incumbent also voted to confirm FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, who is taking up a proposal that could fine broadcasters for saying "Redskins" on the air.
