In an amazing and overwhelming show of support, actor Gary Sinise brought 50 wounded servicemen and women to a special day at Disneyland.
The Gary Sinise Foundation, which helps assist military families and first responders in many different ways, teamed up with American Airlines to help arrange the 4-day trip.
According to ocregister.com,
“The service members – each could bring a guest – had surprises along the way – including a trip to Paramount Studios and a red-carpet welcome at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. in Anaheim.
Veteran actors Tim Allen and Tom Hanks greeted the military members in Hollywood where Hanks introduced a showing of his 1994 movie, Forrest Gump (Hanks and Sinise played fellow wounded soldiers in the film).
Sinise himself accompanied his guests to Disneyland where one of the highlights for everyone was a flag retreat in Disney’s Town Square.
Sinise told a reporter towards the end of the day that
“Getting out of the hospital is part of their recovery. Seeing them have a good time means a lot to me.”
He was not the only person who this meant a lot to. Staff Sgt. Michael Irish did not get a welcome home ceremony after Afghanistan, but was taken instead straight to a hospital for numerous back surgeries, hearing problems, and a traumatic brain injury.
“This is a great welcome home for all of us soldiers who didn’t get a welcome home,” Irish said.
