Gallup: Government Deemed 'Biggest Problem' Facing Country

Anti-government angst reaches top of the list for first time ever

A recent Gallup poll found that for the first time in the poll’s history Americans view government as the “biggest problem” facing the country, beating out all other categories, including the economy, unemployment, healthcare, immigration and terrorism.

Anti-government sentiment has been on the rise since President Obama was first elected and has now peaked as the public’s greatest concern. With a "cluster" of concerns near the top, government—which Gallup notes includes Obama, the GOP, and "general political conflict"—reached the top of the list for the first time since the poll's inception:

The 18% rating of government as the biggest problem is a marked increase from 2009 and earlier, when it consistently came in below 10%:

Unsurprisingly, the economy was the number one concern by far for the previous six years, Gallup explaining that improved economic conditions and falling gas prices seem to have played a roll in its dramatic decline in the poll.

The increasingly negative view of government clearly played a massive role in the 2014 Republican landslide, with many GOP candidates successfully pitting themselves against big government initiatives, particularly Obamacare. If the anti-government trend continues, progressives like Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Warren might face steep challenges in 2016. On the other side, improved perceptions of the economy might also reduce the negative associations with President Obama, which could help or at least lessen some of the collateral damage of his presidency.
