Democrats continue to disgrace themselves by attacking Attorney General nominee Sen. Jeff Sessions, but during the senator's confirmation hearing on Wednesday, an African American colleague came to his defense in a poignant way.
The former chief council for the Senate Judiciary Committee, William Smith, spoke passionately about Sessions' character, and said those leveling baseless allegations against him do not know "his heart."
"We have seen people who have never met Sen. Sessions claim to know him and know his heart," Smith said.
In a not-so-subtle jab directed at Sen. Cory Booker, Smith added:
"We have seen members of this body and members of the House of Representatives just now, who have worked with Sen. Sessions and praised him for his work, and now turn to attack him.
This should not be. The reason we did not see a lot of this yesterday during the hearing is because the members of this committee know Sen. Sessions."
To refresh, Booker shamed himself Wednesday when he broke with precedent and testified against his colleague for no other reason than to establish his political bonafides in advance of a potential 2020 presidential run.
Sen. Tom Cotton said he was disappointed" that Booker "has chosen to start his 2020 presidential campaign by testifying against Senator Sessions." No other sitting senator has ever testified against a colleague at a Cabinet confirmation hearing noted Cotton.
"I believe, like perhaps all of my colleagues, that in the choice between standing with Senate norms or standing up for what my conscience tells me is best for our country, I will always choose conscience and country," Booker said during his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Smith, meanwhile, defended Sessions, noting that the AG nominee "fought for sentencing reform, and not only did he fight for it; he accomplished it."
What's more, despite those accusing Sessions of racism, Smith reminded how Sessions "fought for civil rights."
"He prosecuted members of the Ku Klux Klan, and most importantly, he has fought for the liberty of all Americans, regardless of the color of their skin or their personal beliefs."
"After twenty years of knowing Sen. Sessions, I have not seen the slightest evidence of racism because it does not exist. I know a racist when I see one, and I’ve seen more than one, but Jeff Sessions is not one."
But we all know African Americans who don't toe the liberal-line do not matter to the Left. Thanksfully, Sen. Harry Reid's nuclear option is in play and Democrats are powerless to stop Sessions from confirmation.
