A $60 million discrimination lawsuit has been launched against CNN by a former employee who claims he was fired for being gay and wearing flamboyant clothing.
According to a report in the New York Daily News, William Kane, a technical operator of six years at the network, says his supervisor, John Silva, "turned hostile" toward him after learning that he is gay. Kane says that up to that point, no one at CNN complained about his colorful outfits that included a yellow mariachi suit and blue track suit.
The suit states that Silva asked Kane to stop wearing the attire saying it was "too flamboyant for a male in our department." Silva is also stated as encouraging Kane to work in the "entertainment or make-up department."
Kane says Piers Morgan once called his blue track suit "distracting" and says a network supervisor offered $100 for Kane to change into something else. Morgan denies the allegation. Other photographs show CNN's Christiane Amanpour with Kane dressed in one of his mariachi suits.
Officials at CNN state that they have not seen the lawsuit, saying the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission dismissed the claim after finding no violations, the report states. Yet Kane says he received a right-to-sue letter from the EEOC.
