The Board of Water and Light in Lansing, Michigan, has decided to cancel an upcoming Duck Dynasty look-alike contest during their annual chili cook off because someone was offended.
A BWL spokesman explained the board's decision to cancel the contest:
The decision was made in light of controversial remarks by a Duck Dynasty cast member against the LGBT community. The BWL is committed to diversity and respect community differences, and we regret if the contest offended anyone.
The Lansing State Journal reports that the decision to cancel came in response to a lone emailed complaint to the BWL saying members “showed poor judgment on their part.”
"It took about a minute to decide to drop the contest,” said BWL spokesman Steve Serkaian in an interview. “We didn’t want any controversy from this matter to detract from what has been a longstanding, family-friendly event whose proceeds are donated to charitable causes.”
The complaint came about because of the comments by Duck Dynasty’s Patriarch, Phil Robertson, to GQ in 2013 about his conservative beliefs, including his perception of homosexuality as immoral.
One of the popular events at the annual chili cook-off is a rubber duck race. The first rubber duck to make it across the finish line wins and receives a price. The problem is that it takes nearly half hour from the beginning to the end of the race. Members had devised the Duck Dynasty contest as a way of filling the half-hour wait.
