Disney Channel Airs its First Ever Gay Couple

"Taylor has two moms!"

On Sunday, the Disney Channel featured its first ever gay couple in an episode for the popular children's sit-com Good Luck Charlie.

In the episode, parents Bob and Amy Duncan invite their daughter Charlie's friend Taylor and Taylor's parents, over to their home for a little playdate. Moments before they arrive, Bob and Amy share a brief "Dad's a buffoon, Mom knows best" type of exchange as the two bicker over the identity Taylor's "mom":

AMY: Charlie, honey, are you ready for your playdate?

CHARLIE: Yay!

BOB: Who's coming over?

AMY: Taylor! I invited her parents too.

BOB: So we're all having a 'playdate'?

AMY: Well, honey, this one is actually going to be fun. I met the Mom, Susan, she's really nice!

BOB: Oh I met her! I thought her name was Cheryl?

AMY: No, it's Susan.

BOB: Are you sure?

AMY: Am I sure that I'm right and you're wrong? Always!

The audience erupts into heavy laughter as the doorbell rings. Bob and Amy open the door to see two women standing there with Taylor. Both the women introduce themselves as Taylor's Moms, Cheryl and Susan... Ah ha!

The Duncans kindly welcome Cheryl and Suasan in as Bob throws his arms up, dumbfounded, and says, "Taylor has two Moms!" Amy replies, "Wow! Nothing gets past you Bob."

Back in June when Disney announced its decision to air the episode, a spokesperson for the company issued the following statement:

[the plot was developed] under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisers. And like Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness.
