In a major victory for school choice and the beginning of a seriously urgent education reform, Vice President Mike Pence cast the historic tie-breaking vote Tuesday to confirm Betsy DeVos as the next Education secretary, much to the gnashing of leftist teeth.

Fox News reports that Pence’s vote was the first time in American history that a vice president has broken a tie on a Cabinet nominee’s Senate confirmation – and the first tie-breaking vote by a VP since 2008.

The tie-breaking vote was necessary because two Republican senators – Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska – sided with all the Democratic senators against DeVos. The final vote was 51-50.

“She’s led the most effective school reform movement of the last 30 years,” Senate education committee Chairman Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., said moments earlier on the floor, shoring up DeVos' Republican support.

Democrats, panicked that their precious unions and their indoctrination-masking-as-education were at risk, mounted an all-night speaking marathon in the run-up to the vote in an effort to block her nomination. It didn't work.

"Mrs. DeVos demonstrated a complete lack of experience in, knowledge of and support for public education," declared Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H. Translation: DeVos isn't sufficiently committed to the left's educational aim of churning out indoctrinated morons.

Meanwhile, Republicans accused Democrats of dragging their feet on DeVos and President Donald Trump's other qualified nominees to placate liberal base voters who still haven't come to terms with Trump's election.

"[Democrats are] trying to humiliate and embarrass some of these nominees," White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway told Fox News prior to the vote, saying DeVos is committed to education.

"It seems this gridlock and opposition has far less to do with the nominees actually before us than the man who nominated them," said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. "Enough is enough."
