Dem Lawmaker Doesn’t Like Having to Obey Laws, Tries to Get Out of Ticket

“I always do everything right and I follow the law."

Police dashcam capture a routine traffic stop turn into a complete mental breakdown for a New York Democratic legislator who proved she prefers making laws for others, but not obeying them herself.

“You’re not going to give me a ticket are you?” Ulster County Legislator Jennifer Schwartz Berky asked of Officer Gary Short. “If you do this, it’s going to hurt me.”

Short observed Berky driving 43 mph in a 30 mph zone. Her excuse? She was just following the flow of traffic. Berky kept mentioning how she worked for the county, as if that makes here exempt from the law. She also claimed to only be making $20,000 a year and would rather not have to pay for a ticket. “I’m broke! I’m completely broke!” she said. Officer Short wasn’t taking the bait and returned to his patrol cruiser to compile his report.

Once she knew a ticket was forthcoming, Berky went berserk and dramatically leaned out of the driver’s door and sobbed in hysterics. She emerged from her fairly new-looking Toyota Prius and was dressed quite nicely for someone of her claimed lowly financial status. Berky then starts shouting about having PTSD and suffering a panic attack. She goes on to state that she would “protest” the ticket in court, and claim she was singled out because, hey, everybody else was speeding.

“I always do everything right and I follow the law,” she screamed. (Except that day, of course.)

Berky wouldn’t let the cop explain the ticket and said she didn’t feel safe despite the fact that Officer Short was patient and courteous for nearly a half hour. He went on to explain that he was cutting her a break even though she presented him with an expired license and had expired registration. Watch the wild scene above.
