The idiom "full of surprises" suits comedian Dave Chappelle, given his highly reasonable behavior in recent days, starting with his denunciation of "Black Lives Matter," then his defense of then-candidate Donald Trump, and now his recent praise of our boys in blue during a town hall in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
“I gotta be honest,” Chappelle opened. “For me, personally, the police have been actually sensitive to my situation. I know on at least two occasions where they protected my own well-being. My personal well-being unsolicited from me. So, I appreciate that.”
Chappelle did point to a New Year’s Eve incident that made it all the way to the New York Times when police mistakenly deployed a taser on a drunken 29-year old black man, David Carlson, that missed and hit the crowd. The police chief resigned days later.
Chappelle did not slam the police as evil-minded bigots, only referring to the incident as a "huge gaffe." His speech was to encourage the council on finding a solid replacement for the police chief.
“Now we are being policed by what feels like an alien force," he said. "The council has a tremendous opportunity to be a leader in progressive law enforcement. We can make our corner of the world our standard."
Reasoned debate and calm reflection to get a point across. Who would have thought the man famous for saying "Rick James, b–tch" would be a bright, shining example of how the left should conduct itself?
