As a guest on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, National Public Radio commentator and Hillary Clinton fan Cokie Roberts said supporters of Donald Trump are “morally tainted.”
Host Joe Scarborough set her up to answer, saying, “A lot of Republicans are exposed, right now” in showing their support for Trump.
“He’s a con-man, but they’re supporting him. He’s a racist, but they’re supporting him,” Scarborough said. “What is the lasting impact on the Paul Ryans and the Marco Rubios and the Rudy Giulianis and the entire Republican Party?”
Roberts said:
“They’re morally tainted. I mean, there’s just no question about that. You can’t say, ‘He’s a racist and what he said was textbook-racism but I support him because he’s the nominee of my party.’”
Roberts credits her upbringing as what gives her the authority to make such a claim about Republicans:
“Nobody’s seen anything like this. I mean, you know, not only did I grow up in politics, I grew up in the Jim Crow South and we spent the last 50 years trying to bring people together instead of push people apart. And so that becomes a terrible stain on the country.”
Scarborough agreed with Roberts and said Trump is himself “morally tainted,” which is interesting because his show, and co-host Mika Brzezinski, has been accused of being “too cozy” with Trump and lobbing him softball questions during interviews. But apparently, when birds of a feather flock together, the gloves come off.
The Freedom Center is a 501c3 non-profit organization. Therefore we do not endorse political candidates either in primary or general elections. However, as defenders of America’s social contract, we insist that the rules laid down by both parties at the outset of campaigns be respected, and that the results be decided by free elections. We will oppose any attempt to rig the system and deny voters of either party their constitutional right to elect candidates of their choice.
