CNN Host: Election Win 'Tainted' Because Candidate Didn't Tout Race

Chris Cuomo insults intellect, objectivity of black voters by criticizing candidate who didn't feature his own race.

Dave Wilson has been getting national headlines because he won a race for the Houston Community College Board of Trustees, as a white man in a mostly black district, by using campaign materials that featured mostly black people.

But in an appearance on CNN’s New Day Tuesday, host Chris Cuomo implied that because Wilson used flyers and a website that featured black faces, and a radio commercial with African-Americans speaking, he was somehow dishonest with the voters.

Cuomo would continue to press the point throughout the interview, in the process suggesting that the most important factor for a black voter is the race of the candidates for whom they’d be voting. Wilson noted that the track record of the 24 year incumbent he defeated was littered with questionable decisions, and that those were the issues he wished to make the race about.

But there was only one issue that seemed relevant to Cuomo:

Isn’t one of the issues who the person is that they’re voting for? Shouldn’t the voter know who you really are? Isn’t there a ‘come on’ here?

Wilson noted that he had spoken multiple times over the past two years in front of the largest African-American group in Texas, had spoken at the Community College board repeatedly, appearances that can also be seen on YouTube, and that his opponent had sent out a mailer with his face on it.

Didn’t you kind of stain your own victory here?... Don’t you wish you would have just done it in a way that wouldn’t call into it the legitimacy question?

Wilson disagreed:

I think the people in that district aren’t getting enough credit and the intelligence of who they’re voting for.
