In just one week, the Breitbart #DumpKelloggs boycott has surpassed 400,000 petitioners with no cap in sight.
The #DumpKelloggs began last week when the famed cereal empire announced it would pull all ads from Breitbart's website, saying the prominent conservative outlet conflicted with Kelloggs values.
"To blacklist Breitbart News in order to placate left-wing totalitarians is a disgraceful act of cowardice," Breitbart said of the move. "They insult our incredibly diverse staff and spit in the face of our 45,000,000 highly engaged, highly perceptive, highly loyal readers, many of whom are Kellogg’s customers."
News of the petition immediately circulated the halls of social media, earning over 140,000 adherents in less than 24 hours. That number has since blossomed to 401,902 as of this writing, and may very well cross half a million by the end of this week.
Kelloggs' sudden and largely imprudent move to snub Breitbart has received scorn even from non-partisan outlets like Yahoo! Finance, which said "cereal needs to be agnostic" on what political sites to advertise on.
"Breitbart has a devoted and not small audience," they said, "and it’s not hard to imagine Breitbart supporters saying, ‘Well, we’re going to boycott Kellogg.’ Even if that doesn’t hurt their business that much, that’s the last thing any company wants, is to get in the middle of political stuff going on in the country right now. You have to think: there must have been a quieter way they could have done this."
