Just days after former House Speaker John Boehner called fellow Republican Ted Cruz "Lucifer in the flesh," Boehner was an eager and active participant in a comedy sketch video with President Barack Obama. During his time as speaker, Boehner often faced criticism for siding with Democrats over conservative members of his own caucus.
And that is exactly what he did here.
Boehner made the comments about Cruz during a forum at Stanford University last Wednesday. According to the White House, Boehner was with President Obama and shooting the video which aired at the White House Correspondents Dinner on Saturday. In the video Boehner is seen tearing up while watching the sentimental family movie Toy Story with Obama, offering him advice on retirement such as the joys of drinking in the morning and taking up smoking again.
The White House Correspondents Dinner has a history of politicians making fun of themselves.
Asked about Boehner's participation and his comments about Cruz during Monday's White House Press Briefing, press secretary Josh Earnest declined comment on the Cruz and Lucifer comparison but said former speaker Boehner was happy to assist after being contacted by the White House.
"As I think was evident from the finished product, he was an enthusiastic participant in the production. Speaker Boehner has a well-known and very good sense of humor, and I think he made a very good contribution to our comedic efforts in the film," Earnest said.
