In a speech at the Citizens United Freedom Summit held Saturday in Greenville, SC, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal lambasted Hillary Clinton for her recent comments on religious belief and questioned whether the former first lady and current Democratic presidential frontrunner would welcome “re-education camps” for those whose views on religion differ from her own.

At the Women in the World conference in New York City on April 23, Clinton decried women’s lack of “access to reproductive health care and safe childbirth” saying that “laws don’t count for much if they’re not enforced” and that “deep-seated cultural codes, religious beliefs and structural biases have to be changed.”

Calling Clinton’s words “preposterous and offensive,” Jindal interpreted her comments as an attack on religious liberty:

And by the way the speech in this conference where she said those of us who are pro-life should need to have our religious beliefs changed. She didn’t say how. What does it mean? Re-education camps? She proposed to have our religious beliefs changed.

Jindal went on to declare that Clinton’s sentiments reveal a fundamental misunderstanding of the First Amendment:

My religious beliefs aren’t between me and Hillary Clinton. They’re between me and God. I’m not going to change them simply because she doesn’t like them. She doesn’t seem to understand the First Amendment fundamental rights that we are provided. And one of those foundational rights is religious liberty.
