According to Donald Trump, his favorite book, second to the Bible, is his own, The Art of the Deal. This soundbite-worthy quip has lately been uttered at campaign stops by the Republican presidential candidate. So much so, that the folks at Bloomberg questioned Trump's claim by asking him to cite specific Bible passages he reveres. Trump made it clear that he didn't want to comment on the specifics.
Putting Trump on the spot was Bloomberg Politics' co-managing editors Mark Halperin and John Heilemann. The two collectively prodded incessantly for an answer. Here is their conversation:
HALPERIN: You mentioned the Bible, you've been talking about how it's your favorite book… some people are surprised to hear you say that. I'm wondering what one or two of your most favorite Bible verses are and why?
TRUMP: Well, I wouldn't want to get into it, because to me, that's very personal. You know, when I talk about the Bible, it's very personal. So, I don't want to get into verses.
HALPERIN: There's no verse that means a lot to you that you think about or cite?
TRUMP: The Bible means a lot to me, but I don't want to get into specifics.
HALPERIN: Even to cite a verse that you like?
TRUMP: No, I don't want to do that.
HEILEMANN: Are you an Old Testament-guy, or New Testament-guy?
TRUMP: Probably equal. I think it's just an incredible -- the whole Bible is an incredible [book]… I just think the Bible is just something very special.
The two hosts then switched gears to ask Trump if he's ever read the Quran, to which he answered, "No, I have not."
"What's your view of that as a piece of important world history?" asked Halperin.
"Well, it's certainly a piece of world history and lots of things are happening, but it's not something that I have a lot of interest in," Trump replied.
Trump did say he wants to know why so much hatred spawns out from some readers of the Quran, and indicated that when that hatred does rear its ugly head, "scary" things take place.
Next up (surely) for Bloomberg: Asking Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to cite her favorite Bible passages from a book she considers to be "the living word" and boasts is her "biggest influence."
