New graduates of Bethune-Cookman University, the historically black college in Daytona Beach, Florida, let out a loud chorus of boos in an attempt to drown out Education Secretary Betsy DeVos who had been invited to give the commencement address.

Many students stood and rudely turned their backs as DeVos spoke, especially when she said, “I am honored to become a Wildcat.”

President Edison Jackson was not pleased to see his students exhibit such behavior and was forced to interrupt DeVos’s speech for several minutes to address the graduates who continued getting louder and louder.

“If this behavior continues your degrees will be mailed to you," he said. "Choose which way you want to go.”

Of course, the behavior continued and DeVos was allowed to continue, though still drowned out.

The angry students had petitioned school leadership to rescind the invitation to DeVos, calling it an “insult” to the legacy of the college. The Florida State chapter of the NAACP called on Jackson to resign.

Jackson never backed down and responded in a pro-free speech response to student complaints:

I am of the belief that it does not benefit our students to suppress voices that we disagree with, or to limit students to only those perspectives that are broadly sanctioned by a specific community. If our students are robbed of the opportunity to experience and interact with views that may be different from their own, then they will be tremendously less equipped for the demands of democratic citizenship.

Unbeknownst to Jackson, he is running a daycare, not an institute of critical thinking.
