Last week, education Secretary Betsy DeVos was scheduled to speak at a Washington D.C. middle school when liberal protestors made sure that didn't happen. Several protesters blocked her government car on its approach to the school. Other protestors blocked DeVos from walking into the school building, and one person was charged with assaulting a police officer. As a result, the U.S. Marshals Service is now providing security for DeVos, who has earned the ire of the unions for her educational stances like charter schools, school choice, and private school vouchers.

The Washington Post says this level of security is a very unusual:

The move is unusual for the Education Department, which typically has a team of civil servants guarding the secretary, and for the marshals, law enforcement officers who are generally responsible for protecting federal judges, transporting prisoners, apprehending fugitives and protecting witnesses.

The last Cabinet member protected by marshals was a director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, said Lynzey Donahue, a spokeswoman for the Marshals Service. That office ceased to be a Cabinet-level position in 2009.

Donahue said that for security reasons, she could not provide any information about the number of marshals assigned to DeVos or say whether they are providing round-the-clock protection. It is unclear how long the arrangement will last.

Instapundit wryly observed, "So, basically, taking on the Education Cartel is as dangerous as taking on the Drug Cartels? Well, the former has more money and jobs at stake."

Here's the thing: liberals elevate the virtue of "choice" over everything. They say women have the right to choose whether or not they deliver their babies. They say people even have the right to choose their gender. But when a strong, educated woman advocates for something like school choice, they resort to criminal activity.

Why exactly do they oppose her?

“The basic reason I’ll oppose her nomination is that I don’t think she is committed to public education,” Senator Robert Casey said before she was approved to her position. However, National Review's Deroy Murdock was quick to point out Casey's hypocrisy:

This could be easier to take from Casey, if he were the product of public education. “Casey and his father are regarded as the most famous alumni of Scranton Preparatory School, a Catholic Jesuit preparatory day school in Pennsylvania,” the Daily Signal reported last month. “Casey’s daughters, Caroline Casey and Julia Madeline, also attended Scranton Prep.”

In other words, Democrats want to deprive the working class of the very educational choices they make for their own children. Democrats have long described themselves as the party of the working class, the underdog, the inner city. But when someone comes along who can actually help the working class, underdogs in the inner city, they literally stand in the way of progress.
